John's Christmas City win is another steppingstone
Becahi junior has lofty goals after his trip to Hershey last season.

Bethlehem Catholic coach Brian Nesfeder learned something about 130-pound Kyle John on Thursday night that he didn't know before: his goals for the wrestling season.

After winning the 130-pound title at the 2005 Christmas City Holiday Tournament, John more than happily shared his goals for his junior season.

''My goal is to win districts, win regionals and place top three at states,'' John said after a 4-0 decision over East Stroudsburg North senior Nick Caprino that was impressive not for the score, but for the way he dominated the match.

John took Caprino down early in the first period and rode him aggressively for almost the entire match.

''I'm pretty good on top,'' he admitted.

More than just pretty good.

''I think he's getting very dominant on top,'' Nesfeder said. ''He's learning how to control the match. He's not necessarily scoring points, but he's in control of the match for the entire time. Hey, you can win a state title 1-0.''

Nesfeder made those remarks before hearing of John's ambitions.

''To me, that's a realistic goal,'' Nesfeder said. ''If that's what he's shooting for and that's what he's training for, it's not out of the question. … I'm glad to hear those are his goals. I didn't know that.''

John found plenty of incentive for this season during his sophomore year. He finished fourth in the district and region to qualify for the PIAA championships, his first-ever trip to Hershey and an eye-opening experience in front of a huge crowd on a huge arena floor.

''Now I've got a little bit of experience being out there, so this year I think I can do better,'' John said.

John was one of two finalists for Bethlehem Catholic, which finished fourth in the tournament. Port Jervis (N.Y.) clinched the event after the fifth-placed finals, followed by East Stroudsburg South and Schuylkill Valley.

Port Jervis, which has been coming to the tournament since the 1970s, when Olympic champion brothers Ed and Lou Banach wrestled for the school, sent five wrestlers into the finals while East Stroudsburg North, East Stroudsburg South and Schuylkill Valley each pushed three into the championships. Schuylkill Valley went 3-for-3 in the finals.

East Stroudsburg North crowned a pair of champions in junior Ray Rodriguez (119) and senior Brian Caiazzo (171).

Only four of the 14 championship finals featured the No. 1 seed against the No. 2 seed. Seven wrestlers from The Morning Call area won championships.

Max Bergen, a junior from East Stroudsburg South, picked up his 189-pound title despite being seeded sixth. He was the lowest seed to win a Christmas City title. Bergen edged Ziad Haddad, a home-crowd favorite, 3-2 in a very tight match. Bergen scored the only takedown, and earned the decisive point on an escape, early in the third period. Haddad went in deep on three different shots in the final period but couldn't score.

''His confidence level has really picked up this tournament,'' Cavaliers coach Al Camaerei said of Bergen. ''He knows he can wrestle with top guys now. … He has the tools, he just needs the mental part.''

Camaerei was also proud of the rest of his young squad. He brought just two seniors and four juniors, with seven sophomores filling out the lineup. Sophomore Carl Trytech (112) and senior Justin Halterman (215) earned silver medals for the Cavaliers.

''We're young, but I thought they handled themselves well,'' Camaerei said. ''All season long, we've been having one good match, then one letdown, but it seemed to be all good this week.''
