Wieller brothers help Northampton finish third
Senior Chris wins at 125, junior Justin at 189 in Holiday Classic.

Of The Morning Call

Chris Wieller just kept smiling.

More than 10 minutes after edging Nazareth's Mario Giordano 3-2 to claim the 125-pound title at the Bethlehem Holiday Wrestling Classic on Wednesday night, Wieller refused to let go of that smile.

''This is actually the first year I've won a tournament,'' said Wieller, one of four senior quad-captains for the Northampton High School wrestling team. ''This is the first time I've been in the finals here, but I was in the finals at regionals last year, and that helped.''

Wieller, one of three Konkrete Kids to make the evening finals at Liberty's Memorial Gym, had an exceptional day. He knocked off top-seeded Jeremy Shaw of St. Mark's (Delaware) 5-4 in the morning semifinals, then edged Giordano in the finals.

Another Wieller also had a huge smile. Justin Wieller, Mike's junior brother, won the 189-pound championship with a 2-1 decision over Whitehall's P.J. DiStefano.

Beating the No. 1 seed proved to be the biggest confidence booster for Chris Wieller, however.

''That was really good, I loved it,'' he said of his victory over Shaw, in which he fought off a reverse attempt for the final eight seconds to hold onto the win and the berth in the finals.

''It was just amazing to win that, knowing that I'm in the top level with everyone else … I know what it takes to get to that level.''

Giordano entered the finals on a high as well. A first-year varsity wrestler, the senior upset No. 2 seed Adam Hluschak 8-4 on Tuesday night.

''I actually haven't wrestled him before,'' said Wieller, who will probably meet up with Giordano again next Wednesday when Nazareth and Northampton collide in an important Lehigh Valley Conference match.

''I saw him here. He looks like he's aggressive. I had to keep control a lot. I think it's harder to wrestle a guy you don't know, technique-wise.''

After a scoreless first period, Wieller cut Giordano loose for an escape at the start of the second period, then scored a takedown and let Giordano up again. Wieller escaped in the final period, and then fought off a double-leg shot. Giordano's best shot for a takedown came right after that, when he grabbed onto Wieller and was able to lift him, but pushed him out of bounds instead of pulling him to the center of the mat.

The championships by both Wiellers helped the Konkrete Kids take a surprising third place in the tournament, which was won by Blair Academy for the sixth straight year. The last team to beat Blair for the team title in this tournament was Northampton, back in 1999. Blair crowned a tournament-high four champions.

Blair also had an unusual cheering section. ''Nature Boy'' Ric Flair of World Wrestling Entertainment was present to cheer on his son, Blair 189-pounder Reid Flaihr (the family's real name) , who finished sixth. Flair was already in town for a WWE show the previous evening, but graciously signed autographs during the tournament for the many people who recognized him.

Nazareth, with two champions and five finalists, took second.

Andrew Flegler brought home a title for Nazareth at 119. A senior, Flegler showed superior riding ability on Northern Lehigh sophomore Andrew Arnold, turning him for two points in the second period while never relinquishing an escape en route to a pin in 5:25.

Thad Frick added the only other title for the Blue Eagles, edging Northern Lehigh senior Frank Heffernan 5-4 on a third-period takedown for the 160-pound crown.

Nazareth sophomore Bobby Ward lost a decision in the 112-pound finals that drew boos from the crowd. Ward scored a takedown and reverse and led 4-2, but the referee awarded Blair Academy's Anthony Valles a reverse at the buzzer, sending the bout to overtime. Valles finished it with a takedown 15 seconds into the extra period for a 6-4 win that brought more booing.
