| Blue Eagles bow to Bucs BETHLEHEM HOLIDAY CLASSIC. Nazareth's Bobby Ward, Thad Frick claim titles; Blair Academy is the top team. Saturday, December 30, 2006 By BRIAN FORTNER The Express-Times BETHLEHEM TWP. | The Nazareth Blue Eagles don't settle for second place often, but it's becoming the norm when on the last weekend of December. For the third consecutive season, Nazareth finished behind national power Blair Academy at the Bethlehem Holiday Classic Wrestling Tournament. Blair Academy, ranked No. 2 in the nation by InterMat and Amateur Wrestling News, claimed its eighth team title in the tournament's 13 years by going 6-for-6 in the finals and amassing 295 team points at Freedom High School. Nazareth, the No. 1-ranked team in The Express-Times region, finished second with 210 points. Northampton (195½) was third, Council Rock South (157½) was fourth and Northwestern (144½) fifth. "It's tough to deal with," Nazareth 160-pounder Thad Frick said. "Nobody wants to settle for second place. You have to beat the best to be the best and Blair is the best. That's where we want to be. One of these days, we have to beat them." That day could come on Jan. 20 at the NHSCA Final Four of High School Wrestling at Easton. Frick was one of two Blue Eagle champions, defeating talented freshman Antonio Giorgio 10-8 to claim his second straight tournament title. Bobby Ward was Nazareth's other champ, winning at 130 pounds with a 7-0 decision over Northampton's Seth Csazar. Max Shanaman (135), Mario Mason (145), Eric Medina (152) Cory Peltier (171), Jared Platt (215) and Kyle Hanson (285) all were crowned champs for the Buccaneers. "Wrestling is kind of predictable in some ways," Nazareth coach Dave Crowell said. "In a situation like this, everything would have to go our way for us to win. You have to look at it realistically. If not, we'd walk out of here totally depressed." Medina won his second tournament championship, knocking off Nazareth's two-time state champ Tim Darling 10-6 in the final. "It's kind of reminiscent of the Bubba Jenkins match at the Beast (of The East)," said Crowell, referring to Darling's 10-7 loss to Jenkins from Cox, Va., in last year's Beast semifinals. "The score wasn't real bad but Medina controlled him pretty well. I'm guessing Tim was pretty darn disappointed tonight." The quicker Medina, who defeated Darling 3-2 in last year's final, scored four takedowns and a reversal. Darling had to survive a close call in the semifinals against Council Rock South's Dillon Evans, scoring a takedown 19 seconds into overtime to earn a 4-2 decision and a spot in the final. Mike Greck was the Blue Eagles' other finalist, dropping a 2-1 overtime decision to Shanaman at 145. Frick, the top seed, also had his hands full on his way to winning his second straight tournament crown, having to outlast Northern Lehigh's Scott Sechler 9-7 in the semis. "I'm still not bringing my 'A' game," Frick said. "I'm a state runner-up, I should be pummeling these guys. I'm just not wrestling as well as I should be." Delaware Valley crowned one champ -- state runner-up Dan Kelly at 103 -- in its first trip to the Hurricane Classic. Kelly (13-0) wasted little time adding to his lengthy list of wrestling hardware, pinning Northwestern's Evan Yenolevich in 1:06. "I was real happy to come here to this tournament," said Kelly, who will continue his career at Harvard University next fall. "I wrestled three or four real tough matches this weekend. The competition was great." Kelly, the top seed, reached the final by beating talented Blair freshman Chris Villalonga 6-4 in the semis. Villalonga led 3-1 after two periods but Kelly cut the deficit to one point with an escape to start the third. Kelly took the lead with a textbook barrel-roll takedown and added a two-point nearfall to complete the four-point play and go up 6-3. The Terriers finished in 17th place with 66½ points and two placewinners. Freshman Bobby Stevely finished eighth at 103. Freedom and Wilson each had one wrestler in the finals but had to settle for silver. Zach Rabenold, who knocked off returning champ Justin Wieller from Northampton in the semis, was pinned by Hazleton's Nate Eachus in the 189-pound final. Wilson's Chris Labatch lost in the 285-pound final. Northampton put three into the finals but lost all three. Freshman Jordan Glykas lost a 17-6 major decision to Council Rock South's Mark Rappo at 103 and Jimmy Sheptock lost a 3-0 decision to St. Marks Jimmy Abbott.
